Land Back

2021 • Volume 1 • Issue 2

“Land Back” is the theme of Rooted for the 2020-2021 school year.

This phrase pierced mainstream media in early 2020 after being spread widely on social media in relation to disputes over jurisdiction on Wet’suwet’en lands and more recently at 1492 Land Back Lane. However, this demand and the logic undergirding it are as old as colonial encroachment on Turtle Island. As always, our chosen theme is meant to foster dialogue rather than to advocate one particular mode of understanding or acting in relation to processes of decolonization, reconciliation, and revitalization. We recognize that approaches to Indigenous land, law, and sovereignty are only a few among many topics subject to due controversy. In fact, Rooted exists in order to encourage the exploration of these tensions and complexities.

This series will be published in June 2021.
